Digital acting 2

We`r here set to play out two poses that contain opositte expressions
my first thinking was to create a self confident guy,and my first try turned out a little static and right up down even tough I tried to make a arch ,and line of action

I chose one heroes pose with  a lots of confidence in his acting, standing on a skull ,and I call it ."the conqueror"

The opposite character is are seeing some terrifying ,and tries to protect him self in the moment of taking a step backwards before he stumbles backwards.....,maybe fall before he runs for cover or.....maybe he takes to courage and defends him self........

Concept art character design

Character concept - pre 60is - gang member

When I think about  the 50s that have a great appeal to me (as do the 40 too ! )My first initial thinking comes
down to the swinging 5o´s when you think of thees cool "bigblock" Chevy´s, and guys competing with hot rod cars and girls are hanging  around in these coffee shops ….Rock´n´roll,Elvis,Buddy Holy,Jerry Lee Lewis....and going on.we all know

                                                                          http://www.imdb.com/video/internet-archive/vi1076495385/

                                            women of   WW2 :
My base line for the inspirations was set to be a piece of text in a book from pre 60`s , and I have red a book about womens active duty
in the 2WW airforces ,but it`s a while ago,and I cant come up with the title of the book  it was one I borrowed from a friend, but there also
were some great movies that inspired me to the character`s profile and time ;that is West side story,Rebel without a cause, and this movie; Hot Rod girl ! - and I would like to cross this man character with the book I red and create a ; rough  american girl with it product of it times and outcome of the wartimes

American influences spread through all of Europe after the war.because of the circumstances of the allied forces and U.S. was the winning part at the end of war.

-since I ´m a huge fan of this area and 2 ww history ,and the first mentioned 50´s I choose to make a character in this era.

Now a little bit history and background………
there was a huge development in the textile industry in this time in wartime and after. Caused by the lack of the textiles, actually led to the women´s skirts grew shorter and the development of artificial "silk" led to nylon.
women also begun to wear trousers or "slacks" to be more comfortable and smart wearing.guys did wear jeans, shirts, leather jackets or catalinas.

during the war when the guys were at the  front, most women were operating the factories in the home land and keeping the producing going on.
well as we´r talking of women in war time there also were show girls of that time or special entertainers for the army boys that were called "pin up girls" and the look and style of these girls are special, and would turn out
to become immortal classics.they were there to boost the moral of the fighters at front ,and favorite girls were soon to be painted as gallions on i.e. figther planes, bombers and other.
bilde;

- now this pin up´s ,combined 2 WW  fighter planes - is said to be my biggest fave´s of life !!!
and I just had to make something related to this,so…..
-I´v got the time set to 4o´s-50´s,
-It should be a female character….. ,
-pin up stylish…… though I think it´s little to standard choosing a typical 50´s girl with this "swing skirts" used at dancing jitterbug ).
-now being a little  unconventional ,I try thinking why letting this girl hang around these boy´s car´s ??? always as these ,(though Great) picture movies;
well as I´v got little history knowledge ,I know that there were those women during the war that we seldom hear of ,and that ´s the female pilots of war.
During war time there was women serving their country in many fields ,but as pilots were just few and they were not so good met by their male counterparts.and i.e. Britain their were just aloud in the ATA (air transport).
But the U.S. formed the W.A.S.P (women´s air force service pilots)

a squadron sign by walt Disney

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This official mascot was designed by Walt Disney for a proposed film (from Roahd Dahl's book, "The Gremlins". During WWII, the WASP asked for permission to use her as the official mascot and the Disney Company generously agreed. The image is property of the United States Air Force which is public domain.

All right now! , the girl is a little bit rough in the edges too and can do what the big boys can too !
my mind plays a little bit around the character that she´s set to the late 40´s home coming after the war former female officer and hang out with her girls alike, I call her Helen…and there you have it! "Helen´s Angles" !
Laughs!!!
she´s a though southern girl, but I want her to be cute and feminine to so this is the cross I going for in here style and attitude.
So now that I´v got her back story, and influence of proffession .(or at least former) I set out to choose her anatomic appearance .I decide quick that I would like here to be dark haired ,Black !
-as a little bit sign of a "black sheep" to other blond bimbo house keepers.LoL ! this in my opinion makes her a little bit stronger and resolute ,and to her black hair it falls natural choosing green eyes.
her size ,I make out being about ;168 cm high (she does not really fit the requirement of U.S.A.F. standard of at least being 170 to reach the throttle pedals !
but she gets around, some how ,and back on ground she loves her; all new, bright, red pumps !

she`s a practical girl (choosing trousers to skirt) having grew up on a farm in the southern ,and do handle mechanic props, and love to ride here motor cycle.( I ´ll go for a old flying leather jacket matching).

Here are my main refs.!
All right I´v got here base of over all appearance, and it´s time to start fiddling out some rough sketches and thumbs, but to make a character strong recognizable ,you ´v got to have some characteristic lines special
for that characters head silhouette.then I think her eyes (as always my first impression ,and most important observation to a girl ) is one of the important development.

technically sketch devolopment

I start out sketching out some line sketch on paper measuring about 10cmx10cm or 15x 15

I try to keep in mind doing some consistence in some recognizable "masses" or saying have as few as possible prime polygonal elements ,keep it simple! - clean lines!
Ex. see my characters´head and hair shape and style, and cheek bone.

I move over to her overall body appearance, and maybe try to bring in a expression of relaxed, self confidante and a little attitude !

I then, scan these sketches, and one final sketch I´m happy with I also have inked and colored.
I make a selection of the out line and set it on top layer!

Now I also bring in the Inked and colored version done in traditional media.

-here I also have used the smudge tool to incorporate the colors and try to simulate the blending, like you do in a traditional oil painting.
Now I came to think of ;let`s keep that rendering style and that I did not want the "Outlines in the final image to stand out like in a comic book character.
I found a way of using the "outline" as a base for the shadows and a border to the negative space  .
I then dragged the black lines in to the image, and build up the darkest shadow aereas.

I start making out some prime values in Photoshop and I also sometime prefer to use Sketchbook pro. now the latter is more preferable in term of just let the artist in you sketch and paint freely and simple, but you have the lack of any layer effects and the huge possibility in blending modes that you´v got in Photoshop.
I`haven't really got enough hours in PS as I´v only been using it for a short 1 1/2 year. but as I think I´v got a little experience in traditional art and painting and at least some know-how in color theory ,I think I only can do better  and better !

after some blocking in of the form I don't know how far I would choose to make a final colored render design, but as I´m a huge fan of that Elvgren pin up style ,I try to accomplish that look.
and it`s important to use a narrowed down to few colors making a color palette keeping handy at side

now said that! in a concept development,it is said that by some artists ,that you not have to confuse rendering style with character design!

I did have some problem with my Z-brush software that I did some modeling so I lost some of my works and the only screenshot I got left was the one of the shoes base modeled in 3D s Max.
so I did some further concepts in Photoshop ,making a pilots head gear !
here I just post some of the devolpments:

                                                        keeping eye of my refference!

I love to study colors and work with them and theres allways hard to make up a mind on what main hues to go with in the
composition, and i could talk lots about colors, but here I just show how the helmets have a constance in chosen hue ,and
I don`t know if you`r able to see it ,but see how I lay down the three primary colors in relation to the chosen angle of light
 falling from about 11 o`clock

                                                                         Final image!

I have a tendence to to being caught up in overdoing things so I go maybe to detailed in to painting instead of keeping it rough conceptual?
when drawing it is important to be able to distinguish between illustration and design,it could be very "graphic","cartoonish",or even realistic, but along as the element characterizing the figure are along the character design should be recognizable wether it´s drawn just in pencil or even painted in oils !
- and I think I´v accomplished to create this character fairly standing out.
bilde; Final sheet

I hope those who read this and look at my character enjoyed it ?
I certainly liked this mission !
